Election Night 2008 in DC
Election night is a huge event nationally. In fact, it’s gotten to the point where election night has become a significant global event. DC is probably one of the most energetic cities on election night due to the presence of so many staffers and politicians directly impacted by the night (although the majority of congressional politicians return to their home states for the event).
Last night I started over at the democratic senatorial/congressional party at the Hyatt Regency on New Jersey Avenue and had a few drinks at the bar while watching the early returns. With each Blitzer update (the televisions were mostly set to CNN), the democrat-heavy crowd would start cheering.
At 8, the party opened up and that’s when the majority of people started to show up. We all descended into the main room where the party was staged and CNN was projected on several screens throughout the room. Here, the enthusiasm was palpable as the the young crowd, primarily staffers, hooted and hollered as Obama took an early lead.
At about 9 I headed over to the DNC party over at the Mayflower. The Mayflower is one of my favorite hotels in DC and a terrific place to hold events. The DNC party didn’t fail to deliver – it was completely packed and the crowd was probably skewed a little older than at the senatorial / congressional party although there was still a young contingent hanging around. Over the next hour or so I enjoyed a drink while watching the momentum continue to build and just like at the Hyatt, the Mayflower rocked every time Obama took another state. The snacks were definitely better at the senatorial/congressional party however.
The past election I had stayed up until about 2AM but this time it was pretty clear that the election was over and I ended up taking off by 10PM and heading home.
